Molly and my Family

Molly is a very fickle dog when it comes to people. She decides if she likes a person in about ten seconds or less. When someone meets Molly for the first time, I have them come into my house, take a seat on the couch, and then I turn Molly loose, and she comes and does her inspection. I tell the person to not make a move towards her, do not try petting her, and pretty much ignore her until she makes her decision. That decision is usually signified by a wag of the tail or she hops up onto the couch and a licking of the face ensues.

Molly generally does not like anyone in my family. My father was a huge dog lover and Molly couldn't stand him. I remember the day my family came over to my house for a cookout and my wife made the decision to put Molly outside in her pen so she wouldn't bite anyone. Instead of mingling with the rest of the family, my father sat outside for three hours on the platform Molly's pen is on, trying to make friends with her. He would sit on one side and she would move to the other. He would move, and she would move to the opposite side, growling, woofing, and showing her teeth every step of the way. She wasn't going to have any thing to do with being friends with Pops.

My nephew Garrett came to the house the other night. I had him follow the usual routine and Molly remembered him from when he helped me move to Gastonia. He had spent time with her for a few days and she loves him to death. She couldn't get enough petting and attention from him. Garrett can lay claim to being the only family member that Molly likes and it is a title he wears proudly. As well he should. Its Molly's world. She just allows me to live in it.

Molly and Me... Another Year Older

I turned another year older right before Christmas and my dog Molly was right there beside me where she has been for the past 8 1/2 years. Thanks to the "dog year" she has slowly passed me in age and we are now bearing down on middle age together. We have alot of the same aches and pains in our joints but we still like to act like "young pups" once in a while but, damn, do we pay for it later.
When I first got Molly from the Humane Society, it was determined that Molly would be an outside dog and guard the fortress at the perimeter. I slowly began to move her inside and she slowly began to assume her role as the diva of Gibbs House. I recently found some old pictures of her and she was so small and could barely jump on the bed. She has always had personality and a flair for the camera and she quickly assumed the title of full fledged diva. Her activities include demanding her treats on time, getting the couch pillows fluffed on the couch before she takes a nap, and a bedtime of 7:30. Its Molly's World....She just lets me live in it....
